The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at the North Country Community College Board Room. Ideas for the 2011 theme will be discussed.

Webcam: Watch ‘em build the Ice Palace

Once again, Timothy Baker has set up his camera across the street from the Ice Palace site, which is located on the shore of Lake Flower in the village of Saranac Lake. And once again, you can watch the status of the Ice Palace construction any time of the day, during daylight hours, of course, and see how far Dean Baker and his merry band of volunteers have come to finishing this centerpiece of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival. Construction began on Thursday, Jan. 21, and the lighting of the Ice Palace will commence at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6 and will be followed by the Guideboat Realty Fireworks display. Don Duso named 2010 Grand Marshal

The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee is pleased and honored to announce that Don Duso has been named as Grand Marshal for the 2010 Winter Carnival. The Committee acted on Don’s nomination as Grand Marshal at their Jan. 6 meeting and Don was contacted on Friday, Jan. 8, by Winter Carnival Committee Chairman Jeff Dickson to see if he would accept. “Don was both honored and moved this nomination” Dickson said, “and he was determined to find a way to accept this role and meet his other obligations as well. He promised to provide the Committee with his response by our meeting on Jan. 13.” The Committee discussed Don’s Jan. 10 passing at the Jan. 13 meeting and unanimously agreed that Don Duso be the 2010 Winter Carnival Grand Marshal. “The Committee believed that Don would have found a way to accept this nomination,” Dickson said. “The Committee is pleased to honor his many years of service, both to this event and to the community by naming him Grand Marshal.” When questioned about how this honor will be expressed, all Jeff would say is, “Don’t worry, his presence will be clearly evident.”

Committee saddened by loss of Don Duso

Don Duso

Members of the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival committee are deeply saddened by the death of former chairman Don Duso, who passed away Jan. 10, 2010 at the age of 78. We extend our sincere condolences to his family. Don chaired this committee for about 24 years. He also managed the parade, arranged for the fireworks and performed a hundred other tasks. We will finally figure out what some of them were when they don’t get done and we end up with a little egg on our faces. Somehow, he also found time and energy to cut over 100,000 blocks of ice throughout the years with which to build Ice Palaces. It will take a committee just to do what Don used to do. His objective was that each carnival be better than the previous one. It is fitting that everyone agrees that 2009, his last as Chairman, was the best that anyone can remember. We already miss his ugly hat and big smile very quietly making sure that everything was happening the way it was supposed to happen. Thanks Don – not just for your service but also for the gentlemanly and respectful way you performed it!
