Winter Carnival Headquarters to open Jan. 29
SARANAC LAKE – The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Headquarters opens for the season on Jan. 29 and will remain open until the last day of Carnival on Feb. 9.
Located at 141 River St., the headquarters offers maps and information about the various events of the 10-day festival, which runs from Jan. 31 to Feb. 9. The headquarters serves as a central planning resource for visitors and residents and will be open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The only exceptions are on Feb. 1 when it is open late until 8 p.m. and on Feb. 8 when it closes early at 12:30 p.m. for the parade.
"If the Winter Carnival banner is outside, we are open," said Headquarters Manager Kathy Merritt who assists visitors in planning their Winter Carnival itinerary, along with co-manager, Jackie Foster. "We are extremely grateful to John and Buffy Van Anden for once again letting the Winter Carnival Committee use the building next to Lakeview Deli for our Headquarters. We're in a perfect location, across the street from the Ice Palace."
Headquarters will offer a variety of items for sale decorated with the new Winter Carnival logo including fleece hats, shirts, enamel pins and much more. Winter Carnival buttons and posters designed by famous "Doonesbury" cartoonist, Garry Trudeau, from this year and previous years will be available as well. For those who enjoy Saranac Lake Winter Carnival history, there are items for sale with the vintage logo, as well as a display of the complete button collection including pre-Trudeau buttons.
Also for sale are books penned by local authors including "Saranac Lake's Ice Palace: A History of Winter Carnival's Crown Jewel" by Caper Tissot and "Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Memories" by Andy Flynn, both offering book signings on Feb. 2 and Feb. 9 from noon to 1 p.m. at headquarters. All proceeds from sales benefit the Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee.
The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Committee, formally known as the Society for Promotion of Winter Carnival, Saranac Lake, Inc., is a group of volunteers dedicated to organizing an annual mid-winter festival. This 10-day, communitywide event traces its roots to a one-day Winter Carnival held in 1897 by the Pontiac Club. The Carnival honors its heritage every year by building an Ice Palace from blocks of ice harvested from Lake Flower's Pontiac Bay, where carnival events have been traditionally held for generations.
