The Winter Carnival celebration begins with the coronation of the King and Queen of the Winter Carnival - local citizens who have been chosen for their substantial contributions to the well-being of the Saranac Lake community through their volunteer work. The King and Queen will be announced during the Coronation.
2021 Winter Carnival Court Biographies
King - Joe Szwed
Our 2021 Winter Carnival King was born in Sloan, NY. The son of Anna and Michael and has lived in Saranac Lake for over 40 years. He served in the United States Navy. Our King attended Bowman Gray School of Medicine, graduating as a Physician's Assistant. Among the other colleges, he has attended is SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry. In the past, he was an umpire for Saranac Lake Youth Basketball, a volunteer for High Peaks Hospice, Literacy Volunteers, and Habitat for Humanity. Currently, he volunteers with First Night Saranac Lake, Lake Placid Ironman, Out of Darkness and the Saranac Lake Pee Wee Hockey Association. He delivers Meals on Wheels and Adirondack Health. He has been an Usher with Pendragon and LPCA and acted in the first Pendragon musical. During Winter Carnival he assisted with the Youth Skating races for many years, served as a parade judge, a gift shop helper, a carnival character and a parade participant. He enjoys kayaking, cross-country skiing, and traveled extensively through the United States and Eastern Canada both on his motorcycle and with his kayak. He promotes Saranac Lake Winter Carnival wherever his travels take him. He is a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church. He has served this parish in numerous capacities, one of them being Deacon. He has been married to his brilliant wife, Beryl for 50 years. Together they have three children: Nissa and her husband Erik, Joshua and his wife Carrie, and Rory and his wife Amanda. He has five grandchildren, Braydon, Kayla, Phoebe, Olivia, Kevin and Aubrey. He is a brother to Robert, Thomas, Valentine, and Delores. Our 2021 Winter Carnival King is JOSEPH SZWED.
Queen - Nancy (Howard) Heath
Our 2021 Winter Carnival Queen was born in Saranac Lake and graduated from Saranac Lake Central School. She served in the United States Air Force, as a jet engine mechanic, obtaining the rank of Sergeant.
Our Queen attended North Country Community College and graduated with a degree in Business. Her volunteering spans many years and many organizations. She is a member of St. Bernard's Church, serving as a lector and Eucharist Minister. She served in many capacities at St. Paul's Church in Bloomingdale. She coached girl's softball for many years. She has served many years on Overlook Senior Housing Board. She is a long-time member of the pee wee hockey association serving in many capacities. Has been a life long member of the Saranac Lake Civic Center Board of Directors. She has been a member of the Saranac Lake Woman of the Moose for over 20 years. She has earned her degree in Academy of Friendship, with the Moose Club. Has served on the Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department Woman's Auxiliary. She enjoys spending time with her family, kayaking, golfing or just sitting around a bonfire in the Summer. She likes to skate and snowshoe in the winter. She retired from Adirondack Park Agency and has been keeping herself very busy ever since.
She has been the Tax Collector for the Town of St. Armand since 2006. She is the daughter of Tim and Mildred and has five older brothers and sisters. She is a member of the infamous class of 1974. Our Queen has been married to Rick for over 42 years, they have three children, Jason and his wife Jennell, Ericka and her husband Cameron, and Christie. She has six fabulous grandchildren, who call her Bamma: Michael, Dylan, Heath, Jacob, Rory, and Andrea. Our 2021 Winter Carnival Queen is NANCY HOWARD HEATH!!!!

Archbishop - Paul Giroux
Paul Giroux - Paul Giroux - Originally from Hinesburg Vermont, spent 14 years living in Bradenton Florida and earned a Finance degree from the University of Florida. After being in the business world for only two years, Paul felt that his work was not fulfilling enough and so he moved to upstate New York to be closer to family and to switch careers. He enrolled at SUNY Plattsburgh and majored in Secondary Education, Mathematics. There he met his future bride Michelle who was majoring in special education. A phone call from Dr. Warner Houth to Mr. John Raymond secured Paul an interview for a mathematics teaching position at Saranac Lake Middle School. John Raymond offered Paul the job of 8th grade math teacher in the fall of 1997 and he graciously accepted. Paul’s two passions were teaching, and basketball. Paul coached on and off at the JV and Modified levels and also helped start Saranac Lake Youth Basketball with Becky LaDue. During this time, Paul and Michelle were also raising their lovely daughters, Haley and Jennifer. After five years at the middle school, Paul wanted to better utilize his natural talent of making hard math seem easy and so he moved over to the high school to teach his favorite class, Algebra 2/Trigonometry. Paul truly believes that he has the best job in the world and he couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Paul felt honored when the 2021 seniors nominated him to be the Archbishop of this year's Winter Carnival Court.
Chamberlain - James Carpenter
James Carpenter- James is originally from outside New York City having grown up on the mean streets of Scarsdale. His love for the Adirondacks was inspired by years spent at a small summer camp on Upper Saranac Lake. In 2003, he moved with his family, to Lake Clear. Before becoming a Teaching Assistant at the High School, James has had a myriad of jobs including limousine company owner, Social Studies teacher, copier salesman, stay at home dad and tele-evangelist. He is the father of Charlie (TA extraordinaire in the elementary school) and Maggie (college sophomore at the University of Rochester) and rides the coat-tails of his wife Laura who is a scientist. He is both a graduate of St. Lawrence University and Fordham University. He is a proud member of the Elks and has been the Master of Ceremonies on Trivia Night at the Elks club for the past 23 years with the help of his good friend Tyler Chase. When not working at the High School, James enjoys hiking, kayaking, skiing and water polo. Mostly, he is both flattered and honored to be this year’s Chamberlain.
Princess - Angela Flores
Angela Flores - Angela grew up in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. She graduated from Lake Havasu City High School. She has two brothers, which she is the middle child. She also has a Shiatzu. She is currently attending Paul Smiths College, pursuing a degree in Culinary Arts and Service Management. Planning to graduate in May of 2022. She has volunteered in her home town with Carnivals, Festivals, Parades, Community luncheons and dinners. She has also volunteered to teach cooking classes within the Community. Angela is planning on focusing on Nutrition and Health, hoping to become a Personal Chef for Athletes.
Prince - Sean Ryan
Sean Ryan - Sean grew up in Bloomingdale, NY, and graduated from Saranac Lake Central School. He is the son Lynn and Gary Ryan of Bloomingdale. He has a brother Kyle who lives in Boulder, Colorado. Sean is currently attending North Country Community College with a focus on Radiation Technology, planning to graduate in May of 2022. He earned an AAS degree in Human Services from Hudson Valley Community College in 2013. He served as a United States Marine from 2013 – 2018. Serving as a Tactical Air Defense Controller in Operation Enduring Freedom. In 2011 Sean was lucky enough to be on the Winter Carnival Court. At present, he enjoys being an Ice Carver with Doc & Liam Ward at the Winter Carnival Ice Palace. He served as the Social Chair for the Mountaineers Rugby Football club. He is an active EMT and serves with the Saranac Lake Rescue Squad. In the future, he would like to obtain his advanced EMT qualifications. He also would like employment in the Tri-Lakes as a Radiographic Technician.
Naila Cecunjanin- Naila is the daughter of Alma and Dzenan Cecunjanin, older sister to Amina, Alden and Emir. Naila is a four season athlete in soccer and five season athlete in track. She is also involved in man extracurricular activities including key club, Spanish club, and vice president of student council. Naila plans to attend college this fall. She is very much honored to have been selected by her peers. Naila hopes everyone has an amazing and safe carnival.
Rhett Marshall Darrah- Rhett is the son of Keith Darrah and Garrett and Brooke Foster. Rhett is the 4th son in a family of 5 boys; his siblings are Devin, Blake, Kyler and Kaden. Rhett is also the grandson of William and Susan Peria, Susan served on the Carnival Court in 1965. Rhett is a 5 year varsity sport athlete; he plays football, hockey and baseball. He was also on the 2018 NYS Champion 16U hockey team. Rhett plans to attend college in the fall. He hopes everyone is able to enjoy carnival this year!
Cedar Grace Young- Cedar is the daughter of Shir Filler and Bruce Young. In school, Cedar is the vice president of Key club, co-president of National Honor Society, and the founder and president of the Political Activism Club. She is also part of Saranac Lake's environmental activism community, and she made signs and sent postcards to persuade people to register to vote. Cedar has planned three Adirondack Youth Climate Summits and spoken at other summits across the state. She is a member of the Saranac Lake Climate Smart Communities Task Force and was an active member when the group achieved bronze certification. Cedar is honored to be a member of the 2021 Winter Carnival Court and is proud to represent her community this carnival season.
Colter Cheney-Seymour- Colter is the son of Amy and Kris Cheney-Seymour and younger brother to Lauchlan. Colter is a four year, three sport athlete competing in Nordic Skiing, track and co-captaining the varsity soccer team. Colter likes to give back to his community by volunteering at the Ironman, Lake Placid soccer center and Dewey Mountain. Additionally he enjoys playing in the jazz band and singing in men's ensemble. Colter is part of the New Vision program and plans to continue his medical aspirations in college along with playing soccer. Colter is appreciative of his peers and teachers for being chosen and hopes everyone has a safe and memorable carnival
Kelsey Alicia Anne Leeret - Kelsey is the daughter of Chris and Mary Leeret and older sister to Sydney and foster brother Luke. Kelsey is a three-season, three-sport athlete including volleyball, basketball, track and field, and soccer. Kelsey plans on attending college to become a physical education teacher. She loves to ski, play sports, and stay active. She is honored to be chosen by her peers and teachers to be on this year's winter carnival court. Kelsey hopes everyone has a safe and happy winter carnival!
Forrest Raymond Monroe -Forrest is the son of Ray and Patty Monroe and brother to past court members TJ and Michael. Forrest is a native Saranac Laker. He is a four year member of the Select Men's Ensemble, a member of the National Honor Society and has stage managed for Beal children's theater. Forrest plans on going to college for music business and production and hopes to one day pay back this community for all it's done for him. In the meantime he hopes you make the best of these strange times and have a great carnival!
Gwendalyn Grace Mader- Gwen is the daughter of Michael and Ruth Mader, sister to Dylan, Maddie and Kailyn. She is a four year-three sport athlete participating in cross country, Nordic skiing and track. Gwen has been a class officer all four years of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society and women's vocal ensemble. Gwen has volunteered for the Lake Placid Marathon, Ironman, Carousel-A-Thon and as one of Santa's helpers in the annual Light Up Saranac Lake parade. She plans to attend college in the fall and is very honored to have been nominated by her peers and teachers for the 2021 Winter Carnival Court. Fun fact: She was a page in the 2012 court and her mom was a member of the 1991 court. Gwen wishes everyone a happy and healthy Carnival!
Andrew David Fogarty- Andrew is the son of Terence and Jaime Fogarty, and a sibling to Relly, Sully , Peter and Paul. Andrew is a member of National Honor Society and the New Vision Health Program. Andrew is a four year-three sport athlete who enjoys running in the fall and spring, and in the winter is a proud captain of the alpine ski team. Andrew loves competing with his twin Peter who is also a member of this year's court. Andrew plans on continuing his education and running career through college. Andrew is thrilled to be a member of this year's court and wishes everyone a happy and healthy carnival.
Dellice Frances Chase- Dellice is the daughter of Diane and Tyler Chase, and sister to Sawyer. She is active both in school and the community. She is secretary of her class, National Honor Society and the Political Activism club, as well as a member of Key club. She has also started the Bloomingdale Food Pantry and is the digital archivist for the Voluntary Health Association. After studying in Moscow, Dellice plans to pursue Russian language in college. She is so proud to be a part of the 2021 court, and wishes everyone a happy carnival.
Peter John Fogarty - Peter is the son of Jaime and Terence Fogarty and brother of former court members Aurelle and Sullivan as well as Paul and his twin brother Andrew. He is president of his class and a member of the New Vision Health program as well as National Honor Society and Men's Vocal Ensemble. Peter is a 4 year, 3 season athlete who enjoys competitively running as captain of the cross country team and member of indoor and outdoor track. He plans on pursuing a career in the medical field and competitive running through college. He is super stoked to be part of the court this year with his brother and friends and wishes everyone a cheerful carnival.
