The Winter Carnival celebration begins with the coronation of the King and Queen of the Winter Carnival - local citizens who have been chosen for their substantial contributions to the well-being of the Saranac Lake community through their volunteer work. The King and Queen will be announced during the Coronation.
2022 Winter Carnival Court Biographies
King - dan reilly
Dan Reilly - Our 2022 Winter Carnival King was born in Plattsburgh, New York. He attended St. Bernard's School, Pius, and Saranac Lake Central School and went on to Hobert and William Smith. He enjoys outdoor activities, such as, road and mountain biking, nortic and alpine skiing. He also enjoys writing stories and poetry. He has always been very active in this community. He participated in the building of the Civic Center. Has been a board member at St. Bernard's School and Pendragon Theatre. He is a longtime member of the Kiwanis Club, serving as President for several years. He helps to raise money for the Pat Stratton ride, which contributes to local youth activities. Some of the activities that benefit from this ride are the bike rodeo, and supplying bicycles to the Youth Center. He has been making sure Santa arrives at the Town Hall each year, which he inherited from former King Phil LaLonde. He has participated in the Tour de Force, New York, raising money for families of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. He is also helped to organize Heat-A-Palooza, which raises money for families needing heating assistance. He is the son of Jean and Joe (who was a past Winter Carnival Chairperson), he the brother to Tim, and his wife Debbie, Jeff (who recently passed away way before his time), his wife Mitzy. He the uncle to Zoe, Zane, Maria, Nicholas, Owen, Bianca, Sarah, Erica, and Amanda. He is the father to Hannah, grandfather to Katherine, and the husband of Aggie Pelletieri.
Queen - martha watts
Martha Watts- Our 2022 Winter Carnival Queen was born Brooklyn, New York, and raised on Long Island. She graduated from Paul Smiths College. Our Queen has been very active in our community volunteering with the following organizations. She was Girl Scout Leader, Adirondack Medical Center volunteer, Habitat for Humanity, and was active in the ALPO Dog Sled races. She has been very active with the Winter Carnival Committee, as well as the, IPW Ice Palace Workers Local 101, volunteered at the Visitor's Interpretive Center in Paul Smiths, and also helped with the 90 miler Canoe races. She is active, as a Deacon with Presbyterian Church. She has been a bell ringer for the Salvation Army. She participated as a member of the Paul Smiths College Alumni Association Board, treasurer for the Paul Smiths College Booster Club. She was also active in helping to restore the Paul Smiths College Stage Coach. She is the daughter of Nathan and Kathryn. Mother of Matthew and Jennifer. She was married at the Ice Palace and is the widow of David.
Grand Marshal - Jay Annis and Stacey Annis
Jay Annis moved to the Adirondacks in 1984, after graduating from WCVTI a boat building school in Maine. He managed and later purchased a boatbuilding and antique and classic boat restoration shop, which evolved into Spencer Boatworks. He also created and manages the annual Runabout Rendezvous on Lake Flower each July, highlighting the classic wooden boats gracing Adirondack lakes. He was the Tournament Director for the Can-Am Rugby Tournament from 2005-2020, a period in which the tournament moved from a 2 day to 3 day multi-venue event with over 100 teams attending.
Stacey (Allott) Annis graduated from Paul Smith's College in 1978 and has made Saranac Lake and the surrounding area home ever since. A practicing land surveyor, she obtained her license in 1985 and founded Geomatics Land Surveying in 1994. She served on the Saranac Lake Local Development Corporation for six years, the local planning committee for the village's DRI award project selection process, and currently serves on the Town of Harrietstown Planning Board.
She was girls' Pee Wee and high school hockey coach, and also coached women's rugby for Adirondack High School Rugby and Paul Smith's College.
Jay and Stacey met in Saranac Lake in 1990, married and have two children, Baylee and Sam Annis. Both are members of the IPW101 Ice Palace Workers, the Black Jackets (an honor society of the Mountaineers Rugby Club), and amateur ambassadors for Saranac Lake. They are honored and excited to act as Grand Marshals for the 2021 Winter Carnival.
Archbishop - Lynda Peer
Lynda Peer- As a SUNY Potsdam student driving through Saranac Lake, Lynda thought, "I could be happy living here," and she was right. Not too long after, the opportunity materialized. Bob Seidenstein was the first person she met, and despite that, she stayed. Bob, a true ambassador, enthusiastically introduced her to his hometown. In fact, it was as a member of Bob's Winter Carnival Parade Unit, "The Free Spirits" that she met her future husband Bill. Together they have raised their three fantastic children: Chloe, Quinlan, and Phoebe. In the 33 years since moving to her dream location, Lynda has worked at Saranac Lake School, first as an English teacher and now as the High School Dean of Students. During that time she has loved becoming part of the fabric of the community, serving on the PeeWee Hockey Board, helping with Fun Runs, and now working with her second generation of students. Life doesn't get much better than this. She is truly thrilled to be part of Winter Carnival and to celebrate with the town she is so proud to call home.
Chamberlain - Bill Wilson
Bill Wilson- Bill was born and raised in Saranac Lake under the good graces of his parents, Bob and Sheila Wilson. After graduating from SLCS in 1989, he then pursued his AS degree from North Country Community College, his BS in Exercise Physiology from SUNY Brockport, and his Masters in Teaching Elementary Education from SUNY Potsdam. After a two year stint in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Bill returned to Saranac Lake to teach in the Alternative Education program alongside Cy Ellsworth in 1998. Bill has spent the last 24 years teaching seventh, eighth, first, third, and fourth grades at Petrova. In his spare time, Bill has or still coaches Varsity Boys and Girls Soccer, Varsity Baseball, Varsity Boys Track and Field, along with youth baseball, basketball, and soccer. He has also been the Scoutmaster for Troop 1 Boy Scouts in Saranac Lake for the past seven years. He is the lucky husband of Anita (who stood proudly on Carnival Court in 1990), and father to incredible sons, Owen, Gabriel, and Dillon. When not showing kids a fun time in class, Bill can be found out on the water kayaking and fishing. It is a great honor to be selected as Chamberlain by the senior class of 2022. However, why did it take so long to celebrate the 80's decade? It's time to "build this city on rock and roll!"
Princess - Jessica Kemp
Jessica Kemp- Our 2022 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Princess is Jessica Kemp. Jessica is the daughter of Lynne and Terry Kemp of Saranac Lake, and the sister of Rachel Kemp. Jessica enjoyed growing up in Saranac Lake and loves all that the Adirondacks and Saranac Lake have to offer. She is a graduate of Saranac Lake Central School and the 2013 class Salutatorian. Jessica earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Stage and Production Management with a minor in Hearing and Deafness from Emerson College in Boston, MA. She is currently attending North Country Community College studying Business Management. Her future plans include obtaining her master's degree in either Business or Finance. Jessica is the Student Trustee for North Country Community College's Board and a member of the Student Government. She has also volunteered with the Saranac Lake Young Arts Association. Since the onset of the pandemic, Jessica has been very busy making masks with the Tri-Lakes Community Makers. The masks are donated to organizations such as Adirondack Health, the Adirondack Watershed Institute, and local schools.
In her spare time, Jessica enjoys cooking and hiking. She is also busy planning a cross country road trip.
Prince - Issoufou GarbaHama
Issoufou GarbaHama- Our 2022 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival Prince is Issoufou GarbaHama. Issoufou is from Brooklyn New York. He and his parents were born in Niger and moved to the United States in 2010 when he was 8 years old. He is one of 7 children. Issoufou will graduate from Paul Smiths College in 2023 with a degree in Business Management and Psychology, and a minor in Biology. He is the President of the Bobcat Boxing club. He is member of the Cross-Country and Snowshoe team. Issoufou volunteered with the C-Cap Benefit, Food Education Gala and FEF Taste of Tomorrow. He loves cooking, photography, hiking, and painting. Issougou's future plans include traveling and eventually obtaining a master's degree in Psychology.
Alison Joy Hewitt- Alison is the daughter of Rachel and Richie Hewitt. Alison is the second youngest of her four siblings, Katelyn, Justina, Jon, and Carter. Alison is a three-season, three sport athlete including volleyball, basketball and track and field. Alison plans on attending college to become a maternity nurse. She loves to spend her time baking, playing with her dogs and being outdoors. Alison is very thankful and honored to be chosen by her classmates to be on this year's winter carnival court. Alison hopes everyone has an amazing and safe carnival.
Benjamin Lee Clark-Ben is the son of Jamie and Brandy Clark and the brother to Sam and Kasey. Ben is a three-season, three sport athlete including baseball, football and basketball. Ben likes to give back to his community by umping and coaching in the Saranac Lake town baseball/softball league. Ben is not sure what he will do after high school. He does hope everyone has safe and fun carnival.
Elizabeth Rachel Owens- Lizzie is the daughter of Jennifer and Mark Owens, older sister to Brady, and the granddaughter of Bill and Gail Kissel. Lizzie is a four year athlete in soccer and basketball and has participated in lacrosse and track. She is a part of New Visions and is also involved in extracurricular activities including Women's Ensemble and Key Club. She plans to attend college in the fall and further her education. Lizzie is honored and excited to have been chosen by her peers. She hopes everyone has a safe and happy carnival!
Bailey Lewis Bartholomew-Bailey is the son of Matt and Shannon Bartholomew and is the older brother to Ryan. Bailey is a 4 year athlete competing in varsity hockey and co-captain of the varsity soccer team. He played on varsity soccer and hockey in 2019 bringing home two section championships. Bailey also plays with Plattsburg football club and was the 2021 16U NYS champion with the ADK 46ers hockey club. He is currently the president of Saranac Lake Green Storm. Bailey plans on pursuing higher education in the next year. He hopes this is everyone's favorite carnival!
Juliana Grace DeChavez- Juliana is the daughter of Rommel and Carrie DeChavez and the younger sister to Harley. In school Juliana is the co-president of the National Honor Society, president of the Student Council and secretary of the Saranac Lake High School Class of 2022. She is a pre-professional track dancer and has trained with companies such as American Ballet Theatre, the Sarasota Ballet, Emerge 125, and Dance Theatre of Harlem, alongside volunteer work for local dance studios. Juliana plans to continue her dance education in college and pursue a Fine Arts degree. Juliana is honored to be a member of the 2022 Winter Carnival Court and wishes everyone in the community a happy and healthy carnival!
Raymond William Santiago- Raymond was born in Fort Myers, Florida to John and Maureen (Stunzi) Santiago and moved to Mom's hometown of Saranac Lake at the age of 2. He is the youngest brother of Erica, Mike and Dominique. Raymond is a dedicated Red Storm athlete in lacrosse, basketball, track and especially football where he was co-captain on varsity this past season. Ray also enjoyed a lead role in the SLCS musical "Little Shop of Horrors" and looks forward to strutting his stuff on the carnival stage before moving on to building trade school in the fall. Raymond is honored to be selected by his peers for the 2022 Court and wishes everyone a safe and happy Winter Carnival!
Lydia Mary Elizabeth Wamsganz-Lydia is the daughter of Nicol and Jason Wamsganz and sister to Patrick and Anika. Lydia is a four year three sport athlete and a captain in varsity soccer and track. Lydia is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club and has volunteered for the American Red Cross Blood Drive, graduation, environmental clean-up and enjoys helping out wherever needed. She plans on attending college in the fall and continuing her running career. Lydia is very appreciative of her peers and teachers for nominating her to be a member of the 2022 Winter Carnival Court. Winter Carnival has been a memorable part of her life for as long as she can remember, and hopes that everyone creates their own awesome memories and has a wonderful 80's Winter Carnival!
Benjamin Patrick Isabella- Ben is the son of Ralph and Teresa Isabella. He is the younger of his two siblings Gabby and Ralph, Jr. Ben has been on varsity lacrosse since his freshman year with his best friend and court member Bailey and hopes to have a real season this year. Ben plans on attending college where he will major in business management and play football. Ben is super excited to be on the 2022 Winter Carnival Court and he would like to wish everyone a very happy Carnival.
Mayah Gabrielle Land- Mayah is the daughter of Jodi Denton and Richard Land, as well as the younger sister to her brother Eli. Mayah is a five year, one sport athlete and captain of the alpine ski team but enjoys hiking, biking and canoeing as much as possible. Mayah is involved in 7 school and community clubs holding positions in four of them and is very excited to add Winter Carnival Court to the list. Mayah hopes to pursue a career in physical therapy or become a physician's assistant, but as long as she is in Colorado she will be happy. Mayah is thrilled to have been chosen as member of the court and wishes everyone a fun and safe carnival.
Nathan Allen McCarthy- Nathan is the son of Kevin and Kerry McCarthy and the older brother to Zack and Luke. Nate is an active community member coaching youth football, basketball and baseball. He has volunteered at the community lunchbox, Ironman Lake Placid and Tupper Lake Tinman. At school he is a member of Key Club, National Honor Society and is the Senior Class President. He loves everything that involves family, sports and friends. Nate is also very involved in athletics, participating in varsity football, basketball, soccer and track. In the fall Nate plans on attending college to pursue a degree in physical therapy, he is very thankful for this privilege and will cherish this experience forever.
Couple #6-Court Spokespeople
Alexandria Kelley LaDue-Alex is the daughter of Becky and Chad LaDue, and older sister to Landon. Alex is a 3 sport varsity athlete and captain playing soccer, basketball, and lacrosse. Alex is involved in multiple extracurricular activities including being a member of National Honor Society, Yearbook and President of Key Club. Alex will be attending Nazareth College in the fall of 2022 where she will major in early childhood education and play for the Nazareth Women's Lacrosse team. Alex is grateful to be a member of this year's court and wishes everyone a Happy Winter Carnival.
Gabriel Packer Hennessy Wilson- Gabe is the son of Anita and Bill Wilson and the sibling of Dillon and Owen. He is a four year, three sport athlete competing in soccer, basketball, and outdoor track. Gabe has volunteered at the food pantry and the Methodist church kitchen as a boy scout for the past few years. Gabe is honored to represent his community as a member of the court just as his mother in 1990 and his brother Dillon as a page in 2016. He is very appreciative of his peers for being selected and wishes that everyone has a wonderful Winter Carnival
Couple #7-Attendants to the King and Queen
Sydney Cynthia Dann- Sydney is the daughter of Josh and Marcie Dann and the older sister to Addison and Quinlin. She is a four year-three sport athlete, competing in soccer, hockey and lacrosse. Sydney has been vice president of her class all four years, is a member of the National Honor Society and women's vocal ensemble. Sydney plans on attending college in the fall. She was a page in 2013 and is honored to be a part of the royal family again with her friends.
Kenneth Lawless- Kenneth is the son of Ken and Helena Lawless. Kenneth is the older brother to Liam and younger brother to Kaitlyn. He is a four year athlete for hockey and has a number of years in tennis, soccer, baseball, skiing, and lacrosse. Kenneth is a volunteer coach for the 6u hockey team and enjoys participating in the community. Kenneth plans to attend college this fall. He is honored to be chosen for court and hopes everyone has a great Winter Carnival this year!
